Asia Pacific Wireless Broadband Forum 2009 in Multimedia University

Date: 12 January 2009

Venue: Multimedia University

Website: http://foe.mmu.edu.my/apwbf/

I attended the forum for the Telemedicine session and the speech on "Medicine under Palm Trees – Body Area Networking for the Connected Health" did show some interesting wireless body sensors measuring body temperature and ECG. However I was more interested on the WiMax development in Malaysia in other session. Green Packet P1 CEO's speech on "Wimax Applications Rollout in Malaysia" mentioned a wireless device that seems to be trying to compete with the current mobile phone. It connects to Internet via WiFi or WiMax and has all the features expected from a wireless Internet device. The voice communication will probably using VoIP technology.

Some other interesting statistics from Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) are (2008):
Malaysia Broadband Penetration: 6.5% (1.8 million)
Malaysia Cellular Penetration: 91.3% (25.1 million)
Malaysia PC to Broadband ratio: 5 to 1
